Guaranteed energy savings from Siemens earns customer satisfaction

Peter Love of the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), presented a Certificate of Recognition to Meinrad Wagenschwanz, on behalf of Siemens Building Technologies, Ltd., a subsidiary of Siemens Canada Limited., for the company’s leadership role and long-term commitment to conserve electricity. The certificate was presented to Siemens in connection with its role in helping organizations use less electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a culture of conservation in the province of Ontario.

Siemens, working directly with the City of Timmins, Ontario, helped the municipality to realize a return on its investment through an energy efficient retrofit project.  Siemens began the retrofit of 59 city buildings in May 2006 and completed the majority of the energy savings measures within 14 months.  The total cost to implement these measures was just over $3.5 million, while the entire project is mainly being funded by the utility savings.  Siemens provided the City of Timmins with an annual savings guarantee of $392,000 – with Siemens committing to pay the city the difference if actual cost savings were to fall short of the guarantee.  Conversely, if the cost savings exceeded the guarantee amount, the city would keep the difference.  Since the guarantee period began in February 2008, the project has exceeded the savings guaranteed by Siemens and in fact had accumulated utility savings of over $830,000 in its first full year.

“Siemens is grateful for this prestigious certificate of recognition and is proud to offer businesses in Canada a vast portfolio of green products and solutions from energy efficient retrofits to renewable energy applications,” said Meinrad Wagenschwanz, vice president of Siemens Building Technologies, Ltd.  “At Siemens we believe that working with proactive and forward looking cities, such as Timmins, is a key element to ensuring a positive impact on the environment.”   While the project with the city of Timmins has produced significant utility savings, the other benefits this project produced are just as impressive including infrastructure upgrades through the replacement of old equipment with new high efficiency technologies such as lights, boilers, furnaces, air conditioners, etc.  Lower maintenance costs and increased building occupant comfort levels have also been a result of the new equipment.  In terms of greenhouse gas reductions, the city has already reduced its annual carbon footprint by over 2,500 tonnes as a result of this project.  This is the equivalent of removing over 800 mid sized cars from our roadways each year.
